WHY SHOULD I ATTEND IN-PERSON CLASSES PLUS WORKSHOPS, CLINICS & INTENSIVES?

Use Ohana sessions to zoom in on topics that sometimes take several sessions or even months to get through. Based on your needs and goals, we curate extra nerdy workshops and mini-intensives to supplement foundational themes.

We include extra detailed technique and individualized feedback on flexibility, mobility, strength, stability, climbs, spins, inverts, shoulder mounts, lever grips, reverse grabs, brass monkey grips, ayesha and handspring variations, and more.

The focus is on you– no videos or recordings come close to the live feedback you will receive.

WHAT ARE THE TOP MYTHS & MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT POLE/AERIAL & GETTING STARTED?

🔹 It helps to be very flexibleIn truth, mobility is more relevant to pole & aerial training that flexibility. At Ohana we strive to train mobility throughout every session. Mobility offers us support through many ranges of movement, making us nimble and agile (like ninjas!).

🔹I need to have a nice toe point Without going too far down this anatomical rabbit hole, let’s simply acknowledge that we are all built differently. This means we all look different. Forget the toe point for now and join us in working on illuminating your entire movement and not just your feet! For those of you nerds who wish to go deep, the toe point is discussed in several lectures and our blog.

🔹Upper body strength is necessary– Coordination and body organization is even more important. Just like bouldering, rock climbing, skating, snowboarding and surfing, use of the entire body as a system gets us much further. Beyond physical strength of one region in our bodies, effective mind-body organization will sustain a radiant practice.

🔹I need to be in shape to do this– There is no better shape to start pole & aerial than the shape you are in now. The mind and body you have now did not happen overnight. It took a bit of time to get to this point. At Ohana Studios, we focus on adult learners, with adult bodies, your activity history, background, old & new injuries, hormonal and age-related influences, nutrition history, mental pathways, emotional history– all of which make us such unique individuals. In short, we meet you where you’re at.

🔹I’m supposed to follow dance steps and I’m no good at “dance.”Unlike copy-paste dance classes where we mimic the instructor, we acknowledge that pole & aerial movement is so specialized that it shows up differently in each of us. We teach you how to sense your movement and how to access neural pathways to get you moving productively.

🔹It helps to have yoga, gymnastics, ballet, other dance, or weightlifting experience– While all types of movement are helpful, the neural pathways we need to develop in aerial practice are so different. Beyond the experience of yoga, gym, & dance, physics / engineering statics & dynamics AND the willingness to embody novelty are key to setting our limbs free and torsos afloat up the pole.
